Historic and Art Programs at Ruthven

From Ruthven to Passchendaele

Ruthven Park is happy to announce that a play with puppets has been created by Studio Babette Puppet Theatre to commemorate Brock’s Rangers and the Thompson family contribution to WWI. The program is now available for school bookings and is recommended for grades 4 to 11. In addition to the play your class will receive a tour of the nineteenth century Greek revival mansion and participate in a World War I artifact study.

This event is made possible through the generous support received from Veterans Affairs Canada’s Community Engagement Partnership Fund.

Thompson Family Traditions

Grade 2 Social Studies

Learn how the Thompson family, and other settler families living in the former Town of Indiana, celebrated Christmas. Tour the mansion to see how traditions and decorations have changed over time. Create a swinging 1960’s ornament and a Christmas craft.
Length: 2 hours
Program Offered: December
Cost: $7 per student; adults are free.

Christmas in Conflict: 1914-1918

Grade 8 Social Studies
Grade 10 Applied Canadian History

Experience how the war impacted the lives of the Thompson family and thousands of other Canadians. Learn how to properly handle artifacts, and use primary sources to determine how Christmas was celebrated by soldiers in the trenches and families on the home front.
Length: 2 hours
Program Offered: November-December

Grade 8 – Art: Creating and Presenting

After an art tour of Ruthven Mansion, use the magnificent grounds and Greek Revival Mansion to inspire a one point or two point perspective drawing.  Bring your cameras to capture the architectural elements of the site.
Length: 2 hours or (add this to a morning program) 5 hours

Gr. 10 – Media Arts: Contexts and Influences

Be lead through a WWI history and art tour of the Mansion (focusing on Walter Thompson), students will then have the opportunity to look at WWI political comics from the time, art and advertisements.

Please note: our programs are charged per student/per program, however there is a minimum program fee of $70/half day and $140/full day.

The Welcome Centre and Grounds: Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm – By change Saturday and Sunday

Bird Banding: Banding lab is open April 1 –  May 31 for the fall migration.  Sunrise until 12 noon, weather dependent.
