Tours at Ruthven Park

Mansion Tours

Tours are approximately 45 minutes to one hour in length.

Summer: from Victoria Day weekend until Labour Day – 7 days a week from 10 am until 5 pm. Tours are on the hour with the last tour at 4 pm.

Fall: from Labour Day until Thanksgiving Day – Wednesday to Sunday from 12 pm to 4 pm with the last tour at 3 pm.

Winter and Spring: by appointment for groups of 6 or more people.

Mansion tours of 10+ rooms are guided by staff and/or volunteers. The furnishings and possessions inside are 99% original to the five generations of the Thompson family who called Ruthven home. Being a historic house museum, there are no ramps or elevators to or in the mansion. Chairs can be made available for those with mobility difficulties. A tour is also available through touch screen for those with physical disabilities. There are 8 steps up to the mansion and 21 steps to the second floor once inside. Christmas Tours in December

Join us at one of our four upcoming Christmas events in December 2017, all of which incorporate a tour of the Thompson Family Mansion decorated to suit the different periods of time from 1845-1993 when the five generations of the family inhabited the estate.

  • Sunday, December 10, 2017 @ 2:00 pm: Christmas Scottish Tea and Tour; $14.00 adults, $12.00 seniors, $5.00 children
  • Friday, December 15, 2017 @ 6:30 pm: Tia McGraff Christmas Concert; $20.00 adults, $15.00 seniors, $10.00 children, FREE for members (includes mansion tour)
  • Sunday, December 17, 2017 @ 7:00 pm: Candlelight Mansion Tours; $14.00 adults, $12.00 seniors, $5.00 children
  • Thursday, December 21, 2017 @ 7:00 pm: Candlelight Mansion Tours; $14.00 adults, $12.00 seniors, $5.00 children

New 2017 Offering: Canada 150 Country Day Tours

Nestled along the banks of the gentle Heritage Grand River, Caledonia is rich in stories of the past. As part of your 2017 celebrations for Canada’s 150th birthday, we invite your group to explore the historic roots of Haldimand County in nearby Caledonia, Ontario. Your tour will include beautiful Ruthven Park National Historic Site, a stop at the Caledonia Grand Trunk Train Station, lunch with country-fresh products from the area in the Parish Hall of St. Paul’s Anglican Church as organized by the Women’s Club, and a shopping stop at The Coach Pyramids which is a ladies fashion and gift store.

Tours are offered from May 23 to December 20, 2017 – Monday to Friday. Select a date and let your historic journey of Canada’s 150th anniversary begin!

Statement on Paranormal Investigations

Ruthven Park National Historic Site staff appreciate all interest and inquiries from the public regarding facility rentals and programming offerings. Due to limited resources, we are not able to make special arrangements for paranormal investigations at Ruthven Park National Historic Site. Renting out any building on the site, including the Thompson Mansion and the Coach House, for paranormal investigations is not permitted. Visitors who purchase admission tickets for regularly scheduled tours of the Thompson Mansion are welcome to use hand-held recording devices such as cameras, video camera, and EVPs in areas open to the public, as long as the use of these devices is not disruptive to any other visitors, staff, or the building and exhibits. Ruthven Park National Historic Site staff thank all members of the public for their understanding and cooperation on this matter.

Grounds

Tours of the grounds are self-guided and admission is by donation. From time to time, grounds, archaeology and architectural tours are provided by staff and / or volunteers, depending on availability. Please go to the hiking trails page for more information about how to best enjoy the trails on our site.
